Serving Youth in Butiama
Femina gets great reception at a special week focusing on Youth.
Femina was recently in Butiama to take part in a special week, from 7 to 14 October, organised by the Ministry of Information, Youth Development, Culture and Sports. The 8-day event, which focused on Youth and 50 years of independence, corresponded with the commemoration of Mwalimu Nyerere Day.
On invite from the Department of Youth, Femina was among five participants selected, including FHI 360 and the Youth Department Networks of Dar es Salaam, Mwanza and Mara regions. Femina was invited because of youth-oriented work in Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights, Entrepreneurship, Life Skills and Civics Education.
Participating groups and organisations had spaces where they could present their work and interact with attendees. Femina, represented by Gloria Mkoloma and Rashid Kejo, presented theme areas, shared and discussed publications, and held Q&A sessions. During these sessions, attendees were invited to ask questions about the event itself, and any questions they had about challenges in life. Femina encouraged attendees to be more proactive in finding out about what services were available to them locally, in the areas of health, funding, etc.
Femina was met with strong interest and response, with many attendees sharing individual experiences and seeking advice on life skills, and public officials encouraging continued efforts. Feedback about Femina’s work was greatly positive and the demand for publications was high.
The team also visited secondary schools in the area.
