Bassotu Fema Club's Green Path to Digital Learning
Bassotu Fema Club, based in Hanang District, Manyara Region, turned a challenge into success through innovation and teamwork.
When Fema magazine could no longer reach the club due to shortage in distribution issues, members launched a vegetable garden project in February 2021.
The Club sold vegetables to teachers and the community and later won a school tender to supply student meals worth of TZS 5,000 daily, and earning up to TZS 100,000 monthly (excluding national holidays).
After two years of generating income, the club bought a TZS 1,350,000 projector to access Fema magazine content digitally. This allowed students to continue learning through Femina Hip's, Ruka Juu, Sema Tenda and Cheza Salama agendas, promoting education and awareness.
During the rainy season, water supply supports the garden, but in the dry season, water shortages force Fema Club members to fetch water from Lake Bassotu or buy vegetables from nearby famers having access to water at a low price to ensure that our supply for vegetables is not interrupted and thus continue to supply vegetables even when our garden does not meet the needs of the time.
To address this, the club plans to install SimTanks and use bucket drip irrigation, while calling for support to dig rainwater collection wells.
